2D Designette Champions + Popup T-shirt Booth + Hoodie Update

2D Designette Prize Presentation

Congratulations to Cohort Class 13F03 for being crowned the champions of the 2013 2D Designette!

Remember to visit the SUTD Merch Facebook page to give us a Like!

Popup T-shirt Booth TODAY (6th Aug, Tues)
The design on the T-shirt, also the prize for the winning cohort class of the 2013 2D Designette, was voluntarily designed by our team at SUTD Merch. While we are able to come up with pretty designs as on the prize T-shirt, our primary focus is on bringing to the SUTD community, merchandise designed by the SUTD community for the SUTD community.

Designed by Class of 2015 student Aung Hein Oo (who won himself $100 for it, yes, we still remember, Hein), and voted to be most popular design out of all the others submitted, this tee (2015 & 2016 versions) will be on sale today, 6th Aug, Tuesday, at the Spacebar from 3pm – 6pm and from 7pm – 9pm  for $12 each.

There are limited sizes so come and grab them before they are all gone!

Up Next – Hoodies!
We need to sell those tees in order to raise enough funds to bring you this very highly anticipated item – the SUTD Hoodie!

Designed by student Muhammad Shafiq (yes, $100 too) and winning the vote majority, we at SUTD Merch hope to be able to bring this Hoodie to you by September 16th. In order to do that, we need to raise the cash to proceed with the purchase of the Hoodies.

So, see you later at our
Popup T-shirt Booth
@ the Spacebar,
3pm – 6pm & 7pm – 9pm,
Today, 6th August, Tuesday!

So, where does the money go?

A long, long time ago, there was the problem of how to get this merchandise thing going when there wasn’t any money to purchase printed t-shirts to sell – until the team took cash out of their own pockets to get this thing going (1. We’ve since broken even!, 2. We are sustainable and non-resource-intensive!).

SUTD Merch is being worked on by the team in our own, personal capacities. While we do work very closely with the school, for example, with the Marketing department to ensure proper presentation of the school’s image and marketing intent, we are a setup that is non-affiliated to any of the school’s organizations such as the Student Government or a 5th row club. In other words, we are a for-profit business (but it must be noted that it’s not profit that drives us but the prospect of turning this idea into reality).

Being the responsible and highly accountable people whom we are, we thus feel obligated to work towards being transparent in our financial actions – basically, letting you know where your money goes. Below is a percentage distribution chart which breaks down our revenue into where the money goes and in what proportion.

Cost Chart 5th July 2013

This chart is correct as at 5th July 2013. We’re thinking of doing one of these every 6 months or so. By the way, the profit is 0% due to rounding (Sarah Mao got a free t-shirt, in case you’re wondering). The cash reserves we intend to use for purchasing other stock to expand the merchandise inventory.

Anyway, we hope that this information helps everyone understand that we aren’t money grubbers, out to do this only for the cash. We love the school and want its culture to grow, and that culture comes from you, the people in the school community. So stay tuned for exciting things we have planned in the coming months and, as always, feel free to ask us any questions!

Our Plans

At SUTD Merch, what we want to do is to make available to the school community, school merchandise. That’s the stuff that is available at all the other schools except for ours – but more and better. I’m sure that we can all agree that our school sorely needs much more in the merchandise department, both in terms of quantity and quality. A few of us have come together to drive an initiative in regard to this issue and hopefully, it’ll be a success with your support.

The platform functions as a creative outlet for the community, and it aids the school in celebrating and finding our unique identity by encouraging designs to be created and submitted by people from the SUTD community itself, whom we reward if their designs are chosen to be produced.

The means through which we wish to achieve this can be summarized in one word – sustainability. As our school is currently really small and growing slowly, we understand the constraints we face and seek to achieve a balance between what we supply and what we sell. Hence we address this issue by getting the community to vote for designs they would purchase. It’s similar to threadless.com, if you happen to know what they are, in that regard.

It creates a system that allows for demand and supply, quantity and quality to be managed feasibly and in entirety – an extremely important consideration given our current population size.

We are personally committed to keeping merchandise prices affordable, as seen with the $12 price on the initial t-shirt we have produced. Also, we are committed to re-investing our profits into procuring a wider variety of merchandise in the future.

What can you expect from us in the future?

We are working on making transparent our cashflow and financial information so that everyone can see how much of our money goes where. We intend to make this accessible on our website to everyone in the SUTD community.

On top of that, we want to also give back to the school. We aim to (sustain-ably!) give back to the school by providing sponsorship for 5th row groups or worthy initiatives.

We are working towards slowly expanding our inventory and establishing a physical store in school, as well as a online store for the SUTD community to be design, vote for and purchase said merchandise, by September 2013.

So stay tuned for more from us!

Get your Tees!

Thank you to everyone who has gotten their tees today at Matric Day! We sold 104 tees today, mostly to the Class of 2015 students – and not all the pre-orders have been collected yet..! For everyone else who hasn’t gotten the tee yet and would like to, especially for the Class of 2016 students, we’ll be setting up the booth again during the Freshmen Orientation camp this Friday, 10th May – at lunch and dinner in the canteen, just so that everyone will definitely have a chance to catch us!

For those of you new to SUTD Merch, we here feel it’s important that you know we’re not just trying to sell t-shirts. We’re doing this as part of a greater vision – if you want to know more, you could check out the about section or talk to any of us from the Merch Team at the booth on Friday.

See you all then!

[ If you can’t be present when the booth is up but want a shirt, email us and we’ll work things out! You can find our emails in the about section.]

[ A note on the hoodie a few of you have been asking about – the good people at Marketing are trying their best to look for a vendor that stocks the hoodie of the right colour, so unfortunately it will not be available too soon. In the meantime, get a shirt, maybe?Â đŸ™‚ ]

Make your pre-orders now!

Class of 2015, read here:

We are now taking pre-orders of the SUTD t-shirt from you soon-to-be-freshnomores! Click HERE to pre-order. Also, check out the images below for how we have refined the shirt design. There’s now the SUTD logo on the back, behind the neck, and the ‘of’ issue has been fixed! There are now two versions of the tee, one for ‘Class of 2015’ and the other ‘Class of 2016’.

The shirts will cost $12 each, and as there are only 150 pieces in stock for each design, we’d highly recommend you to pre-order! Pre-orders will be taken from now up till 7th May, 2359hrs. Shirts will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis. They may be collected at Matriculation Day on the 8th of May at the concourse (we’ll have a booth in the concourse!). Payment to be made then too. Just as a note, if you can’t be at Matric Day, the pre-order link takes care of that so just go right ahead and pre-order. đŸ™‚

Be assured that the shirt quality is decent – the Merch Team went down to the vendor to get it checked out. It’s definitely better than our previous Orientation and Open house tees, at the very least. So no worries there!

Proceeds will go into funding future merchandise items for SUTD.
